Earwicker |
Of course, at the time, it enabled me to progress further back with my paternal line. But time comes when it gets difficult going further and further back in time and we look, like water, for an easier path and that's generally when we start spreading outwards and picking up those maternal lines that were only of passing interest when we were chasing hard along that paternal path! After a while I returned to my Earwicker line, little knowing that a lot of research has been (and is still being) done on this name in Sussex. It wasn't long before Maureen Earwicker's (now Luxton) name came up. Maureen runs the One Name Study group for the name (and all it's variants) and is a great source of help. She doesn't charge anything for her time, but obviously a SAE and photocopying costs are appreciated by her (see below for her details). So, after contacting Maureen, I discovered several more generations (5 to be exact) going back to the marriage of John Earwiger and Mary Taylor in Sidlesham on 15 Oct 1677. Lots and lots of bits and pieces of information, notes and speculation. All there to be more thoroughly researched. As yet I've not had the time to progress with this deluge of information but it's all there waiting to be looked at. Meanwhile, I've written up the bare bones of what she passed to me and that can be downloaded from the link at the top of this page. It's a zipped up copy of a Microsoft Power Point presentation but if you don't have Power Point then let me know and we'll see what can be sorted out. Another good source of Earwicker information can be found at the EARWAKER mailing list on Roots Web. This is a mailing list for the discussion and sharing of information regarding the Earwaker surname and variations (e.g., Earwicker, Erricker) in any place and at any time. You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
